M.T.C. Club records, 1839-1857; bulk: 1839-1843.

Records of the M.T.C. Club, a social club for young men formed in Oct. 1839 "for the purpose of free social converse & mutual improvement and amusement." Members included Jonathan Fay Barrett, Benjamin Drew, Jr., Henry J. Gardner, W. W. Greenough, Nathan Hale, Jr., George W. Minns, Allen C. Spooner, Charles W. Storey, and others. Records consist of satirical meeting minutes summarizing performances of songs, poetry, and readings; discussions of literary, historical, philosophical, and political subjects, including the death of William Henry Harrison; and transcripts of mock trials. Meetings were held weekly, usually at the American House on Hanover St., Boston. Members chaired meetings on a rotating basis, and each chairman kept the minutes of his meeting. The second volume is mostly blank, and regular minutes end in Apr. 1843, with later notes by Charles W. Storey in 1853 and 1857. Included is a photocopy of the first volume. The origin of the club's name is unknown.

2 cased vols. and 1 narrow box.
